One consistent provincial law will replace a patchwork of confusing bylaws:
In recent years municipalities throughout the province have enacted bylaws to control the use of pest control products. The result has been a confusing list of contradictory bylaws that often don’t address the issue in a positive way. The liberal government has recognized this and enacted a single law that is the same for everyone and replaces these confusing bylaws.
Products that are banned for use will no longer be available in retail stores:
A major problem with municipalities regulating the use of pest control products was that municipalities had no legal ability to restrict retail outlets from selling products that were banned for use. The new law will regulate all users including the ‘do-it-yourselfers’. Products that end up on the province’s ‘banned list’ will no longer be available in retail outlets.
Banned list of products will be announced at a later date:
Once the new legislation is passed, the government of Ontario will regulate the sale and use of pest control products by introducing a ‘banned list’ of products that can no longer be used or sold in the province of Ontario. It is our understanding that this list has not been determined yet and we certainly hope that products that are low risk will be allowed to control harmful insect infestations which cause considerable damage to lawns such as grubs.
The new law will be enacted in 2009:
The new legislation will go into affect next year and will have no effect on your lawn care services this year. As older generation products are put on the ‘banned list’ their will inevitably a new generation of green products to replace them. Sarritor, a new biological and natural weed control is one such product. As an exclusive supplier, Dr. Green will be using Sarritor this year on a limited basis in cities where traditional weed control products are limited by local municipal bylaws.
Dr. Green supports the government’s initiative to have one fair law that affects everyone equally:
The Ontario government proposal so far are and equitable and as such, we support the legislation but do expect the government to continue on a reasonable approach when it comes to protecting the landscapes of every Ontario homeowner by allowing safe, low-risk products to control infestations that are harmful or damaging to the green infrastructure which includes home lawns.
