Fall Weed Control in Dallas:

Fall weed control is very important to maintaining our Dallas lawns because it is a great time to clean up the remaining summer weeds and it is also the perfect time to apply pre-emergent’s to prevent cool season (fall and winter weeds). Dallisgrass.jpg

Above is a picture of dallisgrass, a common weed invader in Dallas. Fall is a great time to apply multiple applications of weed control to rid lawns of this pesky weed.

Post-emergent fall weed control:

Post-emergent weed control should be applied in September to control any remaining summer weeds. Common summer weeds invading Texas lawns are yellow and purple nut sedge, dallisgrass, crabgrass, clover and spurge. Many of these weeds will go to seed int he fall time so controlling them as soon as possible is best.

Pre-emergent fall weed control:

Pre-emergent weed control must also be applied each fall to help lawns avoid the cool season weeds that grow from October to February. A good pre-emergent product such as Specticle or Resolute should keep weeds at bay for up to 6 months. Pre-emergent’s create a barrier in the lawn that prevent weeds from growing and ultimately reduce growth by as much as 80%. Common cool season weeds often seen in Texas are poana, dandelions, and thistle. When applying pre-emergents it is best to avoid bare spots and thin spots in the lawn as not only do pre-emergents prevent weeds from growing but they also prevent grass from filling in.

As always the best weed control is a good healthy lawn. Thick, green lawns will actually choke out weeds naturally so be sure to follow a good fertilizing, watering, cutting and seeding schedule all season long and your lawn will look like this:
