Poanna Grass / Poanna Weed (po-anna)

There is currently a large infestation of Poanna grass in Frisco. Poanna is a cool season grassy weed that grows well in cooler conditions such as fall, winter and spring. This grassy weed is pretty easy to recognize because it grows in clumps in many Bermuda lawns and it grows taller and faster than Bermuda grass. Poanna goes to seed in the spring so on top of the grass you will see seed heads sprouting. Since Poanna looks so different than Bermuda grass it can also be quite an eye sore.

How to get Rid of Poanna?

Getting rid of Poanna is not an easy task once it has taken root in the lawn. The best form of Poanna control is through pre-emergent weed controls which should be applied in the fall and the spring just prior to Poanna germination. The best product for Poanna is Specticle (pre-emergent herbicide), however this product is very expensive. Once Poanna has taken root in the lawn try using tribute total which does control Poanna but you may need to be prepared to make multiple applications to the weeds before they will go away.

As, always the best defense against weeds is a healthy lawn! A thick, green, healthy lawn will choke out many unwanted weeds from the lawn so be sure to maintain a good fertilization schedule, proper lawn mowing heights, and a good watering program. These important practices are far better than any weed control product money can buy.
